What Is A Doula

A Doula [pronounced Doo la] is a woman who is trained to provide support to women and their families during pregnancy, childbirth, and the period of time following the birth.

An experienced Doula can mean so much more for you, your partner and your family.

As a Doula i will be there to support you, dispel your fears and anxieties, empower you, reassure you, keep you calm, keep your partner calm, ease your pain, comfort you. I will be there for you and only you throughout your labour you will NEVER be left alone confused and afraid. I will endeavor to help you feel completely safe, confident and trust in your own amazing ability to give birth.

Women helping women in childbirth has been practiced for many many years and is still practiced today especially in non industrialized countries. Sadly western society has seen child birth move from homes with the readily availabe support of mums, sisters and aunties to hospitals where birth has become very clinical having little female or motherly emotional and physical support.

Research has shown that having an experienced woman with you throughout labour can:

  • shorten the length of labour by 25%

  • reduce the need for pain relief by 30%

  • reduce epidural requests by 60%

  • decrease cesarean section rate by 50%

  • enhance the birth experience for both mother & father

  • promotes breastfeeding

Every family is unique, so I offer a variety of doula services personalized for each birthing experience. Positive Experiences

I came across Lisa when searching for a doula for my 3rd pregnancy. My previous
pregnancies were far from what I had planned, and I wanted to feel somewhat more in control with a doula, even though I had a doula in my second pregnancy, the experience I had with Lisa was so much better than all the previous births.
So, when I met Lisa for the first time, she asked me about my previous birth experience, and I explained that my first was an emergency c section, after a gruelling 20-hour labour. Due to
the emergency c section, I was traumatised for years and feared going through the whole ordeal again, so when I fell pregnant 7 years later, I decided to look for some support through
a doula. Unfortunately, this experience was frustratingly bad too. My doula spent most of the time she had with me talking about her pregnant daughter, and instead of me feeling listened to and supported, I found myself counselling her. It did not help that she was due a week
before me, so I did not feel I had her full attention. I went on to dilate fully but have an assisted forceps delivery with a lot of tearing. I felt very disappointed with the experience and let down and went on to develop severe postnatal depression.
6 years later, my search for a doula resurfaced after falling pregnant again, with it came the trauma of my previous awful experiences. From the onset, Lisa was so empathetic and took her time listening to my concerns, I felt at ease with her instantly and felt I could trust her to help me with my birth.
Throughout my pregnancy, she kept in touch with me by meeting up with me, and by phone and text, and I was able to share any concerns I had. I was diagnosed with gestational
diabetes with the pregnancy, and Lisa sent me lots of information and useful articles that made me feel reassured. What I loved about Lisa was how she knew so much about my cultural practices and was very respectful of that; I did not feel awkward explaining my
cultural traditions around birth and she helped incorporate that into my birth plan brilliantly. This in comparison to my previous birth was so much better, I felt accepted and fully supported.
This time, I had a firm birth plan and full support from Lisa, my birth was the most perfect experience I had. She constantly reminded me that she was waiting for my call when I went into labour and her diary was cleared in wait for my labour day. This was what I wanted to hear, especially as I previously did not feel a priority with my last doula.
Lisa was fantastic during the labour, her calm and confident approach made me trust her, and she helped me through most of the dilation at home with easy breathing exercises. I literally followed her breathing as I was anxious at the beginning, but I soon relaxed and let my body do what it was designed to do naturally. When I went into hospital, it was a short while before I was ready to push my baby out. What I loved about Lisa was how she involved my husband during the labour, and was not pushy or over dominating the birth, and when I gave birth to my son with just gas and air, she left us to bond in the initial few minutes after birth. It was just perfect, and the best birth experience I could have asked for- and in some way therapeutic.
I cannot thank Lisa enough; I would say she is an angel! I could not have asked for a better birth partner, and I honestly cannot recommend a more chilled, understanding, and lovely birth support. I love the fact that she is so well informed about different cultures and respectful of different practices and encourages you to do things your way without feeling ignored.
Thank you once again Lisa,
Love from Shamima and Zakaria xxx
